The funkiest man in town turns 65 on the day after Christmas, and to celebrate, he’s hosting his annual birthday bash down at the Howlin’ Wolf. George’s little soirée has become a holiday tradition for many of our friends here at The Infirmary, dating back to the old Howlin’ Wolf (and the post-Katrina Baton Rouge birthday bash at the old Chelsea’s off of Highland Rd). Guests are always a who’s who of top flight New Orleans musicians in town for the Christmas holidays, happy to celebrate with the man that by many opinions, helped father the funk.

Goin’ Downtown: The Wood Brothers :: 2012.11.27 :: The Parish Room

November 25, 2012

On Tuesday night, Chris and Oliver Wood are stopping in South Louisiana for a gig at the House of Blues’s fabulous Parish Room in the French Quarter. You may recognize Chris as a founding member of modern jazz titans Medeski Martin and Wood, as well as being one of the most talented bass players out there today. His brother Oliver, while a little less well known, is just as talented and just as powerful a presence on stage – leading the sibling duo on acoustic/slide guitar and vocals. Topping the band off is gifted drummer Tyler Greenwell, whose propulsive percussion creates the last layer of the Wood Brothers sound.

There’s nothing like a home field advantage. This old adage rings true especially in New Orleans, where our haunts, domed or otherwise provide us and our local favorites with a certain level of comfort and certainly, support. We live in a city that bestows on us the wonderful gift of being able to see world class musicians in their weekly gigs, residencies where they can settle in on otherwise quiet nights and absolutely blow the roof off the joint. If that old haunt Tipitina’s happened to be domed and held 72,000 people – Galactic would without a doubt be the team in black and gold, in all their different forms, protecting their HQ for the better part of two decades.
