Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds | 2012.02.19 | The Howlin’ Wolf

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have been no strangers to New Orleans of late, with Tuesday night’s Howlin’ Wolf show being the third of three performances in the city within the last 6 months. They had a Parish Room double bill with crooner Allen Stone in early October, and then a highly lauded Voodoo Music and Arts Experience set (which can be viewed in it’s entirety below) later that month. The perfect stacks of Marshall amplifiers rose from the House of Blues stage, with nothing but three lone mic stands teetering in front of the monitors as the crowd began to fill in and take their places below. Sleigh Bells were in town for the night, a long overdue stop in New Orleans, especially after last years gig just down the road at Baton Rouge’s Varsity Theatre was such a success. The lights dimmed as their fantastic choice of house music, Notorious B.I.G. and Ole Dirty Bastard were cranked up to the crowd’s delight, and just as the party began to come alive, Sleigh Bells took their places in front of their massive wall of sound. UPRISING: An Antibalas Recollection

Antibalas | 2012.10.09 | Tipitina’s Uptown | New Orleans LA

The Brooklyn afrobeat orchestra known as Antibalas took over Tipitina’s on Tuesday night, supported by New Orleans’ own Free Agents Brass Band and seemingly on a mission to snake charm the dance floor into some sort of deep hypnotic submission. The set touched on new and old – with songs from the recently released ‘Antibalas’, like Dirty Money and The Ratcatcher making their New Orleans’ debut and old heaters like Battle of The Species (see video below) taking the ship into darker waters. One of the best things about these guys is that they have the ability make such complicated music seem easy, they have a loose and enjoyable stage presence, but also possess the ability to ferociously raise the intensity of the room in mere seconds.

American Patchwork: The Anders Osborne band takes Tipitina’s

Anders Osborne Band feat. Luther Dickinson | 2011.12.10 | Tipitina’s Uptown

I first heard about last weekends monster Tipitina’s gig by glancing up at the wall one night inside the famed New Orleans nightclub. No Facebook update, no Twitter announcement, just a non-descript yellow show poster hanging by the mens room with large black letters that read: ANDERS OSBORNE. LUTHER DICKINSON. DEC 10TH. It may have been at Explosions In The Sky, it may have been at the 7 Walkers live album recording… but regardless – It was true, Anders was back – and he was bringing hill country guitar virtuoso Luther Dickinson with him. This was going to be huge. Read more »

Look: Dragon Smoke | 2011.12.02 | Tipitina’s Uptown | New Orleans LA

The all-NOLA supergroup threw on their Dragon Smoke alter-ego last Friday for an off-season gig before their West Coast run begins tonight at The Mint in LA. Fresh off the announcement of a soon-to-be-made Dragon Smoke album – the group that started with a one-time gig at The Dragon’s Den in 2001 (hence the...

Look: Walter “Wolfman” Washington & The Roadmasters | 2011.11.30 | dba | New Orleans LA

The Wolfman continued to hold down his post as dba’s chief tenant of funk last week, howling and screaming into the night as The Roadmasters thick groove warmed up everyone in attendance on the city’s first really cold night of the year. Walter and his boys seemed on a mission to make it more...

George Porter Jr. @ Po-Boy Fest 2011

Another resounding success from the folks who brought you “Po-Boy Fest 2009″, “Po-Boy Fest 2008″, as well as the highly lauded “Po-Boy Fest 2010″. A nice holiday heatwave had the crowds in a bit of a festival sweat, but no temperature change could keep the masses from heading down to Oak Street and celebrating...

Sketch and his boys are in the middle of a month long Wednesday night residency at The Maple Leaf club. We decided to stop in and see what they were up to, maybe even catch some of our favorites and/or holler out a call of the wild. They played some old material, did their...

Listen: The Radiators | 2011.01.21 | Tipitina’s Uptown | New Orleans LA

The Radiators kicked off Tipitina’s 33rd Anniversary with a run of shows back in January, commemorating not only the venue’s years here on earth but also their own special trip. One of my favorite Rads experiences hands down, by the end of the show I was in full-on noodle mode in the back...
